Vita Sancti Elisabethae 1207-31 - The life of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia (1207–1231), told in medieval songs and texts
Hungarian princess, Thuringian landgravine, nurse, saint – who was she, this “Mother Teresa of the Middle Ages”? Numerous legends have grown up around the life of St. Elisabeth, which, as related in the Vita S. Elisabetha, a legend-novel from the early fourteenth century, are declaimed on this CD. In astonishing diversity and with the forces of three ensembles – Ioculatores, amarcord, and Ars Choralis Coeln – minnesongs, estampies, excerpts from courtly epics, a Hungarian dance, processional songs, hymns, sequences, and Psalms illustrate the astonishing life of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia. With the complete song texts and further legends, the opulently illustrated booklet complements the extensive musical-literary documentation in honor of the 800th anniversary of St. Elisabeth’s birth.
