Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644 – 1704) was one of the most important violinists and composers of the 17th century. Born in Bohemia, and two years in charge at the episcopal court of Olomouc, in 1670 he started to work for the archbishop Max Gandolph von Kuenburg in Salzburg. His sonatas on the rosary are dedicated to the archbishop. They cannot be seen as violin sonatas in the ordinary sense, but as a collection of short stories, which are discovered within Anne Schumann’s interpretation.

In a multilayer way the devotions book proposes access to prayer and meditation, provokes association. Thus, the dialogue with room and space becomes not only a music acoustical intention of the recording. To discover interpenetration between the visual and musical arts is a central intention of this production. Music speaks its own language and is a painting in invisible colour. It fills halls and soul with the colourful richness of sound. The sonatas are arranged along three topical perspectives: the joyful, the dolorous and the glorious secrets of the rosary. The interpreters chose three different thuringian churches for the recording. This of Friedelshausen near Meiningen contains a precious baroque organ built by an anonymous master. It hosted the recording of the cycle of the joyful and close to nature sonatas, presented on this first CD.
