Even though piano music was not the main focal point of Josef Schelb’smusical activity in terms of quantity, it wasthe linchpin of his artistic career. The stylistic spectrum of Schelb’s work ranges from late romantic beginnings to a rather nonromantic neoclassicismand on to atonality and dodecaphony. Sontraud Speidel has devoted herself to Josef Schelb’s works for many years in performances and studio recordings. Her first recording of five works for piano by Schelb, including his ”Partita ritmica” for two pianos together with Ruben Meliksetian, was released in 2002. The ”Ten small pieces” for piano on this recordingwere premiered by Speidel in Karlsruhe in 1989.
