Krzysztof Penderecki:
Dies Irae
Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima
Despite their different musical languages, all three works on this album by Polish composers Karol Szymanowski and Krzysztof Penderecki share the inherent character of a lament.
Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater, completed in 1926 and based on a Polish translation of the Latin medieval text, is considered one of the most important compositions of the 20th century.
Penderecki’s three-part oratorio Dies Irae was commissioned to commemorate the murder victims at the former concentration camp in Auschwitz, and hence carries the subtitle ‘Auschwitz Oratorium’.
The album closes with Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for 52 strings. The final haunting bars of the work use a tutti note cluster, starting fff and fading to pppp.
Recordings: Konzerthaus Wien, 28 January 2000 (Tr. 1-6), 31 March 1995 (Tr. 7-10).
