Until recently one could often read the assertion which has long since been refuted that between the death of Johann Sebastian Bach until Mendelssohn actually no Protestant church music worth mentioning had been written. The fallacy of this assessment can be verified by five cantatas of Gottfried August Homilius (1714–1785) composed for Advent, the 2nd to 4th Sundays are Epiphany, as well as several smaller Latin church works. On the occasion of the composer's 300th birthday Carus was able to engage Handel's Company, an ensemble founded in 1999, under the direction of Rainer Johannes Homburg.
