Reminiscences of Shakespeare, who himself lived for a time near the old Bethlehem Hospital and gave the theatre some of its most impressive mad figures, intentionally run through the program on this CD. The fascination with the darker sides of the human psyche, whose scholarly examination was still in its infancy, links the Elizabethan theater, indeed the intellectual world of the era in general, with the Restoration. Inbetween came a revolution and a civil war which turned the established order upside down, the after effects of which had a lasting influence on English society. Whilst at the beginning of the century Robert Burton called "melancholy" (nowadays we call this depression) the most widespread malady of the period, which almost everyone suffered from at some time and had as many manifestations as people that were affected, in 1695 Thomas Tryon described the condition of the lunatic as being really a kind of "inner civil war", where wild impulses and extreme passions overturned the power of reason.

Dorothee Mields has made recordings for numerous international radio stations, and in 2008, her CD „In Darkness let me Dwell“ with Hille Perl's gamba ensemble was the Quarterly Critics' Choice of the German Record Critics' Award.
