Protestant church music of the Baroque period can be regarded as an inexhaustible treasure trove: in the period between the two “leading composers,” Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, a vast repertoire of concertante music for voice with different instrumental accompaniment was composed, much of which is still awaiting rediscovery.
Alongside Schein and Telemann, this CD includes less wellknown church music: Schütz’s star pupil Christoph Bernhard (1627/28–1692) mastered the Baroque musical vocabulary just as fully as Philipp Friedrich Böddeker (1607–1683), who came from the Alsace, became organist at Strasbourg Minster and later was organist at the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart. The excellent qualities of his works can still convince listeners today.
The tenor Hans Jörg Mammel and the Ensemble L’arpa festante present baroque curiosities which are all extremely worth hearing. If you search for new music for Christmas, you will doubtless find it here.
