A world music Rarity - Uyghur and Kazakh music from Xinjiang Dreyer.Gaido discovered the Uyghur band QETIQ in the spring of 2010 in a bar in Urumqi, the capital of the independent Uyghur province Xinjiang in north-west China. The Uyghurs, a Turkic people, live in this region, which is three times the size of France. The Taklamakan Desert, a sand desert, second only in size to the Sahara, is part of the region. Much diplomatic skill was needed before the band was allowed to accept invitations to Germany to perform in the Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin (Pergamon-Museum) and at the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück.
The band leader is the singer Perhat Khaliq, who performed as soloist with the NDR Bigband and the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra. Some of Qetiq’s songs are their own compositions, but there are also transcriptions of traditional Kazakh and Uyghur music, such as Dolan Muqam, music from the deserts of Xinjiang, which dates back centuries.
The recordings were made in Urumqi and Osnabrück.
