MAN-NAM I (Meeting) for clarinet and string trio (1977) was written three years after Younghi Pagh-Paan’s arrival in Germany, when the composer was urgently looking for a way out of the stressful situation in which she found herself – provoked by the confrontation with a culture that was still so foreign to her. In order to overcome her culture shock, she explores the meeting of both cultures in this four-part composition inspired by verses by Korean poet Sa-Im-Dang Sin (1504–1551).

The composition ma-am (Mein Herz) (My Heart) for female voice solo (1990), dedicated to Nuria Schönberg-Nono following the death of her husband Luigi Nono, is the first in a series of works in which the composer specifically explores the topic of “the heart”.

In U-MUL / Der Brunnen (The Well, 1992), the percussion – one of the cornerstones of traditional Korean music – plays a central role, as is often the case in Pagh-Paan’s works. It symbolizes the archaic image of the well, which itself serves here as a twofold symbol: on the one hand a metaphor for the human soul, which is as deep as “a bottomless well” (Meister Eckhart), and on the other the representation of a social act: of taking and passing on – of sharing.

In the latest work from the “heart” series, Mein Herz I (My Heart I) for soprano and viola (2020), the composer turns to the poem of the same name by the Austrian poet H. C. Artmann (1921–2000). In this piece, the highly synthetic relationship between voice and instrument is of particular significance: together they move along in an organic and slowly pulsating flow of time, meet at structurally important pitches, embrace one another, and separate only to reunite soon afterward.

Horizon on the high seas. We are encircled by our own gaze.) These lines by Simone Weil (1909–1943) together with the first of the Seven Last Words on the Cross (“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” Luke 23:34) serve as the inspiration for Younghi Pagh-Paan’s string quartet Horizont auf hoher See (Horizon on the High Seas, 2016). In Simone Weil, she seems to have found a kindred spirit who, like her, succeeded in integrating the realities of life into her art both from a spiritual point of view and with a continual “movement in motionlessness.”
