Wind Bands in XVIth Century Granada - Urrede:
Pange lingua a 5, Quinta Boz
Guerrero, Morales…
Reconstructing the sound of a 16th century minstrel ensemble is a real challenge for any musician who wants to make the music come alive for contemporary audiences. After over four centuries, there are a large number of unanswered questions regarding many musical matters that seem to be almost impossible to reconstruct satisfactorily without making us feel that it is still foreign to us, imprecise and strongly subjective. However, Manuscript 975 in the Manuel de Falla Library (EGr-975) provides us with a great opportunity to study and become better acquainted with minstrel music in the city of Granada in the second half of the 16th century, giving us both a specific geographical and time-related context in which to work. Thanks to this, we now have information on how many minstrels there were (when they were connected to church-related institutions), the types of instruments they played and even some ceremonial and practical details about where they performed or at what points in the Divine Office they actually played. The study of extant documentary sources from the second half of the 16th century in Granada-- as well as other contemporary centers (Sevilla, Jaén, Córdoba, Toledo, etc.), and in a few cases, references to 17th century musical practices-- allows us to get a somewhat more precise understanding of the musical universe in which these musical ensembles worked and the specific role they played in Granada.

Instruments and instrumental combinations

The information we have about the instruments the minstrels played at this period is found in documents from the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral in Granada and these are our chief sources. The standard instrumental consort of the time in every church-related institution was as follows: shawms, cornetts, sackbuts and curtals. Apart from this, there is specific evidence that flute and crumhorn ensembles were used in Granada, instruments that are not mentioned as often in the sources at other centers (with the exception of Toledo and Sevilla). All of these instruments and their respective families, are played on this recording. In addition, and as an example of the use of instruments throughout the rest of Europe, the muted cornett is also played here, since it is cited in the Granada Cathedral when referring to trombones (as opposed to sackbuts): "Petición de Juan Arroyo, que porque casa una hija y tiene necesidad, se le haga merced de comprarle unos trombones y tres mutas, que son cosa muy útil para la iglesia [...]"* (Petition made by Juan Arroyo, because his daughter is getting married and needs [these], he is pleased to purchase a few trombones and muted [cornetts] for her, something that is very useful for [use in] the church.) (Chapter meeting 13 March 1579, Chapter records of the Granada Cathedral).
