Domenico Scarlatti’s brilliant keyboard sonatas are well known (he composed over 600), and they have influenced many composers who came after him – CPE Bach, Mozart, Clementi and Beethoven to name just a few. The sonatas have also been an important fixture in the repertoire of some of the greatest pianists to this day. Domenico’s father, Alessandro was a key figure in the late Italian baroque age. He composed a large amount of sacred music - cantatas, masses and oratorios. These works are notable for their rich harmonies and intricate counterpoint. What is less known about Alessandro’s output, and which also shares the qualities of his sacred music is his keyboard music. This album is the first recording of his keyboard music on a modern piano, reveals its grandeur, complex melodies and daring harmonic progressions.
