The city of Alcalá de Henares, formerly Complutum, is today a leafy tree, the head of a diocese that bears its name. The origin of this tree, its roots, are the holy children Justus and Pastor, aged seven and nine, whose martyrdom took place at the beginning of the 4th century in the Hispano-Roman city of Complutum. They were beheaded by order of the prefect Dacian, after bearing witness to their faith and showing their determination not to renounce it. This is how Saint Isidore of Seville tells it: "When the prefect Dacian came to Complutum, he ordered everyone to deny their faith in Christ and offer sacrifices to idols, otherwise they would be condemned to death after being tormented. The desire to be martyrs and to give their lives for the Lord was kindled in the children Justus and Pastor. They threw down the tablets on which they were learning or writing their first letters, in order to learn better from Christ, the Teacher, and without being called by anyone, they left the school and went before the judge where they publicly proclaimed themselves Christians. They offered to endure the cruellest torments for their faith in Christ; an act that was far beyond their years."
