The collaboration between The Atlantic Trio and Maarten Koningsberger got off to a flying start during recordings for a cd of music by Charles and Adolphe Beckand. That was so inspiring that it led to a series of concerts featuring Scottish and Irish folk song in the original adaptations for just such an ensemble by Beethoven. Other great composers who wrote songs based on folk music were added to the program: Brahms, Ravel and Butterworth. Some of their compositions are the original settings, others have been arranged for piano trio and baritone by Bas Verheijden. The recurring demand for a recording of the programme resulted in the present cd. We hope you enjoy it! In 1809 Beethoven was persuaded (to his great financial advantage!) by George Thomson of Edinburgh to compose accompaniments for a number of Scottish, Irish and Welsh folk songs for voice and piano trio. Thomson was involved in the movement devoted to the preservation of Scotland’s cultural heritage. Commissioning new accompaniments to old folk melodies was related to this goal.
