Karim Said became known to the UK audience when Christopher Nupen’s film ‘Karim’s Journey’ followed him, then aged just 14 from his family in Jordan, to the Purcell School in London. Daniel Barenboim arranged for Karim to study at the school and has been a mentor to Karim. Karim was a member of the East West Divan Orchestra, created by Barenboim and Karim’s uncle, the late Edward Said. Karim has established an orchestra in Amman and conducts and plays throughout the Middle East and Europe. Another East West Divan alumni, and a friend and colleague of Karim’s during his time in the orchestra, conductor Domingo Hindoyan completes the story – this is Karim’s debut concerto recording, and the chemistry between him and Domingo is palpable in the concerto – core Barenboim repertoire too! Barenboim said of the young Karim ‘What he already knows you cannot learn’.
