The 6 sonatas for violin and harpsichord obbligato rank amongst the most beautiful chamber music that Bach wrote. They are overshadowed by the solo sonatas. This despite the fact that they are masterpieces in their own right, only without the aura of a magnum opus. The slow movements display a range of moods, from desolate and lonely to radiantly festive. Meanwhile, the fast movements are a mixture of high-spirited instrumental music and contrapuntal mastery. There are canons, fugues, chorale preludes and much more: practically a compendium of options. Daniel Gaede and Raphael Alpermann guide us through this treasure trove of curiosities with virtuosity and sensitivity. Once again: 2 CDs for the price of one.
Sześć sonat na skrzypce i klawesyn w katalogu dzieł kompozytora oznaczone numerami 1014-1019 to jedne z najpiękniejszych dzieł kameralnych Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Dwie równ-orzędne partie tworzą układ sonaty triowej, a każda z sonat ma swój odrębny charakter. Bach wracał do tych utworów wielokrotnie je przerabiając, a pierwsze wersje powstały pod koniec pobytu w Köthen w latach 1720-1723. Są w nich nastrojowe adagia, pełne porządku fugi i kanony, opracowania chorałowe w formie preludiów i wiele innych. To prawdziwy wachlarz bachowskich różnorodności i umiejętności. Daniel Gaede, grając nieco romantyczną frazą i Raphael Alpermann, czyniący z klawesynu błyskotliwego partnera dla skrzypiec, stworzyli fantastyczną interpretację, godną bachowskiego kunsztu.
