Compositions by Franz Liszt, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are the base of the proposed transcriptions for organ by Jean Guillou, Louis Robilliard, Lionel Rogg, Peter Kofler and David Briggs. Peter Kofler with this CD goes on with a series of recordings at the organ of St. Michaels Jesuit Church in Munich. The history of the organ at St. Michaels in Munich goes back to the 16th century, when the first Jesuits came to the city and developed wide reaching activities. Already during the construction period of 1590 a first organ was installed, coming from St. Lorenz, and in 1597 with the church a new organ by Urban Heusler was ready as well, which as also its two successors was in use over around 100 years. The most important musician, who ever worked at the Jesuit church, was certainly Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger, who for some years hold the position of the organist here and planned the organ building in 1896 by Franz Maerz being realized with testamentary support of Rheinberger’s wife Franziska, who had died in 1892. Unfortunately this instrument was destroyed in 1944 by an air raid. The reconstruction of the church took until the 1980th, and in 1966 as well as in 1982/83 new organs were built. The today’s organ of St. Michaels was reorganised by the Rieger company from Vorarlberg/ Austria in 2011. The prospect designed by Jesuit brother Johann Hörmann within the 17th century was kept and a huge part of the existing pipes of the Sandtner organ (1982/83) has been reused. The new organ construction offers rich possibilities for an adequate interpretation of a wide ranch of organ compositions and is also an ideal basis for attracting improvisations. This richness and variety is demonstrated by the CD series.
