Anyone looking for new music with entertainment value will find it with Benjamin Scheuer. On the surface, his music surprises with funny, crazy sounds and playful elements. In the background, Scheuer shapes his compositions, which often consist of various miniatures, very precisely and complexly.
In the eponymous song cycle "Impulsive Songs", Scheuer illuminates a different idea, sound or process in each track, dissects it and exaggerates it. The use of the simplest electronic means gives the pieces a lofi aesthetic and often misleads the listener in terms of sound.
In addition to three ensemble works, two solo pieces, interpreted by Vanessa Porter and Nikolai Rosenberg, complete the portrait both as audio and video. Here it becomes clear that Scheuer uses a wide range of sounds: rubber pigs, kazoos and exit horns can be heard as well as traditional sound generators. And last but not least, the human being and his voice are at the centre of the compositional interest, as in “Laughing Therapy”, in which the pianist amazes with crazy nuances of laughter.
