Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale [The supposed miracle, or Cracovians and Highlanders], born of the demands of the moment and strongly rooted in the dynamic socio-political context, has remained one of the most popular Polish operatic works for more than two hundred years. Today, well into the twenty-first century, we still want to see this singspiel that once enflamed insurrectionary fervour; we want to listen to it; we want to immerse ourselves in the world of a village near Cracow where, one afternoon, incredible, and highly instructive, things occurred. Sentiment? A weakness for rustic folklore? Or perhaps quite simply, and above all else, a longing for the fundamental values of which Bogus?awski was an uncompromising eulogist. Still today, The Supposed Miracle, now whole eras away from the world of its first ever performance, ‘extracted’ from its revolutionary context, remains a brilliant tale remarkably intelligent in its simplicity of the values of an ethical life, mutual respect and tolerance, the primacy of tradition, and family and social cohesion and it remains surprisingly current today.
