The first complete recording of the Leuven chansonnier! In 2015, an art historian approached the Alamire Foundation, the International Center for the Study of Music in the Netherlands, on behalf of an art dealer to seek musicological advice on a small musical manuscript. Subsequent research quickly brought its significance to light: the manuscript was identified as a previously unknown chansonnier from the 15th century. As the original owner could not yet be identified, it was named the "Leuven Chansonnier", reflecting its new location in the Library of Voices, one of the buildings occupied by the Alamire Foundation on the historic grounds of Park Abbey in Leuven (BE). The songbook is of exceptional value. It contains 50 compositions, including one religious work and 49 French chansons, 12 of which are not preserved in any other source. Although no names of composers are given, other sources identify the composers of 26 of the works, including such important Franco-Flemish polyphonists of the 15th century as Johannes Ockeghem, Antoine Busnoys and Firminus Caron. The composers of the remaining 24 chansons remain anonymous for the time being.
