Johann Sebastian Bach’s music carries the vocalist through all the holy days of the ecclesiastical year. Christmas wouldn’t be same without Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and celebrating Holy Week without his two great Passions of St John and St Matthew – it would be incomplete. Away from Bach’s well-known oratorios, there is some truly wonderful music to be discovered in the cantata cycles that accompany us through the year. And so Christian Hilz decided to create a very personal musical journey through the ecclesiastical year – a cohesive cycle containing both familiar and less well-known highlights from Bach’s sacred music for bass voice, interconnected by chronology and key progressions and linked by some of the most beautiful instrumental movements of its kind.
