Sonata no.2, for Cello and Piano

From the collaboration between the Czech cellist Lucie Stepanova and Belarusian pianist Ksenia Kouzmenko, the idea was born to record works of 3 Czech composers from the 20th century. The choice for the Czech composers is based on Lucie's possession of Josef Palenicek's work the Variations on a Choral Song which was composed in 1942. This is not coincidental as Lucie, as a child had the privilege of meeting Palenicek in her parental home; Lucie's mother, was his former student. Lucie Stepanova has been inspired by this encounter. Palenicek, in turn, has been inspired by Janacek. Janacek has been so important to Palenicek, that one can very much hear the influence of Janacek in his music. And Palenicek meets Bohuslav Martinů in Paris where they study composition and piano together.
