For the baroque faithful death was not the end but rather a release from the agonies of earthly existence. Death was like a deep sleep from which he would be called the day of judgment, to rise from the dead and to experience the eternal, blissful life in the light of its creator with the other blessed. Accordingly, the cantatas on “death”, selected by Marcel Ponseele and il Gardelino, feature the theme not as much as a fear of death, but rather assurance of eternal life. This is the final result of the small cantata cycle of il gardellino with cantatas to various theological topics.

Muzycy zespołu Il Gardellino pod dyrekcją Marcela Ponseele stworzyli bardzo interesujący cykl płytowo-kantatowy. Każdy album posiada przewodni temat „teologiczny”. Tym razem mamy do czynienia z muzycznym zmaganiem się z tematem śmierci w kantatach trzech barokowych mistrzów: Johanna Sebastiana Bacha (BWV 27, 55, 159), Georga Philippa Telemanna (TWV 4:17) oraz mniej znanego obecnie Georga Melchiora Hoffmanna (1679-1715), którego tytuł kantaty stał się tytułem całej płyty. Dla wierzących śmierć jest jedynie przejściem do szczęśliwego życia wiecznego - i z pewnością muzyka i tekst zawarte w tych kantatach niosą z sobą takie przesłanie. Piękne, stylowe granie muzyków doświadczonych i profesjonalnych, które w pełni oddaje afektywną moc zawartą w słowach i dźwiękach tych wzruszających kompozycji.
