“I cannot live without music” - Wolfgang Sawallisch in Munich

Wolfgang Sawallisch acted as General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera for 21 years – therefore longer than any other musical director since the establishment of the institution in 1818. From 1971 until 1992 he substantially shaped the musical life of Munich alongside the principal conductor of the Bavar ian Radio Symphony Orchestra Rafael Kubelik (1961– 1979) and Sir Colin Davis (1983 – 1992), as well as Rudolf Kempe and Sergiu Celibidache who held the same position at the Munich Philharmonic from 1967 to 1976 and 1979 to 1996 respectively.

Time after time the great opera conductor loved to concentrate wholly on ‘his’ orchestra or – as a guest – on the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; and as the tradition of the so-called ‘academy concerts’ goes back as far as the history of the one-time Court and National Theatre (today the Bavarian State Opera) he had such opportunities whenever he wanted them. A significant proportion was devoted to the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, which in itself reflects the fact that half of the present eight-CD box is dedicated to a cross-section of recordings of Bruckner’s work made between 1980 and 1991 – from the early Fi rst Symphony through to the mature Fifth; from the audacious and rather seldom-performed Sixth (here electrifyingly and vividly played and conducted) to the uncompleted Ninth.

Live Recordings: Herkulessaal der Münchner Residenz, 1983 (CD 1, 6), 1980 (CD 7), 1984 (CD 8); Aula der Universität München, 1985 (CD 2), 1990/91 (CD 3), 1981 (CD 4), 1984 (CD 5),
