Weber: Piano Music, Chamber Music & Songs

Hyperion - CDA 67008
William Lloyd Webber was the father of two famous sons: composer Sir Andrew and cellist Julian. However, he was also a distinguished composer in his own right and wrote much attractive music. He may have written more than he did but he spent much of his life as an administrator, most famously as the Director of The London School of Music. This CD assembles a selection of chamber pieces and songs carefully chosen by his son Julian and recorded by The Nash Ensemble as part of their ongoing series of recordings of British music for Hyperion. The eight songs are magically sung by John Mark Ainsley to the piano of Ian Brown.

'These modest miniatures reveal a composer who was able, not only to invent memorable ideas, but to do some artful things with them. Conspicuously Ireland-like titles such as Frensham Pond evoke a summery idyllic mood. The eight songs, beautifully delivered by John Mark Ainsley, are likewise warm romantic visions of bliss.' (The Sunday Times)

'A miniaturist and melodist of quality. His case is argued in performances of notable distinction' (The Yorkshire Post)

'Lloyd Webber's is a voice that should be heard, and it could hardly be heard to greater advantage than [here]' (Classic CD)

'A delightful selection. Expertly crafted and melodically felicitous. Fine performances from an all-star cast' (Hi Fi News)
