The survival the Leiden Choirbooks from the iconoclastic fury in 1566 seems to indicate that the manuscripts were carefully kept somewhere under lock and key in the church. Today, these choirbooks provide unique and extremely valuable proof of the rich musical life of 16th-century Holland. Even though musical practice flourished greatly in Dutch churches in 16th century, extremely little evidence of this has survived in Dutch archives and libraries. Of the countless music manuscripts that were used by singers of the liturgical hours as well as others, only a fraction of these have survived the ravages of time.

The Egidius Quartet was founded in 1995. The core of their repertoire is music that was composed within the sphere of influence of the Habsburgs (Charles V, Margaret of Austria, Philip II ). Thanks to their own research and their collaboration with specialist musicologists and scholars of literature the quartet’s many CDs and concerts have drawn much attention to such unjustly forgotten masters as Nicolas Payen, Cornelius Canis, Thomas Crecquillon and Gheerkin de Hondt. They have also recorded the complete first two Musyck-boexkens (1555) of Tylman Susato and the Dutch-language repertoire from the Chansonnier (circa 1505) of Lauwerijn van Watervliet. A double CD will appear yearly from 2010 to 2015, each set being devoted to one of the six Leiden Choirbooks; the quartet’s intention is to revive the music contained in one of the greatest collections of polyphonic music in Western Europe and make it accessible to all.
