Opening with its famous ‘Sunrise’ fanfare, there is no mistaking Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra. A bold, intrepid tone poem, famously used by Stanley Kubrick in 2001: A Space Odyssey, it explores mankind’s place in the universe, diving headfirst into themes of religion, science and individuality.
“From the very long, tummy-rumbling organ pedal, pierced by Philip Cobb’s trumpet, this sunrise took on a fiery, Mediterranean quality before scrabbling double basses plunged us into primeval waters. Roth, airborne more than once, set an urgent pace, bending double as bassoons coiled and slithered. […] Simovic spread Mitteleuropean charm over his Tanzlied solos, a spun sugar topping against buoyant double bass pizzicatos. Who knew Nietzsche could be such fun?” – Mark Pullinger, Bachtrack
François-Xavier Roth’s interpretation of Debussy’s Jeux completes the album. The kaleidoscopic score begins in a darkened stillness, developing fluidly with flashes of light and playful, chromatic motifs that perfectly depict the ‘games’ firstly childish, later amorous of the ballet’s characters.
Recorded live in DSD 256fs on 13 & 14 November 2018 (Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra) and in DSD 128fs on 25 January 2018 (Debussy Jeux) in the Barbican Hall, London. Super Audio layer includes 2.0 stereo and 5.1 multi-channel mixes.
