Vespers of the Blessed Virgin
The texts of Hildegard’s songs are miniatures of her theology. They revolve around the major themes of creation and incarnation, and with that also around Mary as the mother of Christ. Hildegard’s image of the Virgin Mary resembles the chaste and majestic sculptures of the Romanesque period that depict Mary as the throne of sapience: It is never a matter here of isolated Marian devotion, but rather Christ stands at the center as incarnate wisdom, which his mother presents to the world. The women’s schola Ars Choralis Coeln and Maria Jonas lend Hildegard’s profound songs a time-transcending sound. In the vastness of the large Romanesque basilica of Eberbach Monastery, their voices rise up powerfully and reverently. For their CD Rose van Jhericho – the song book of Anna of Cologne, released in 2007 on the Raumklang label, Ars Choralis Coeln has already received numeorus awards, including the Diapason 5 and the prestigious Choc du monde de la musique.
