Perhaps one could recognize a particular strength of Hassler’s in this versatility, whose pieces suited the prevailing taste of diverse eras, brought joy to lovers of simple secular and sacred songs as well as to learned connoisseurs. It is the Penalosa-Ensemble’s aim to take this stylistic, characteristic and compositional wealth into account when presenting this varied crosssection of the composer’s works which includes settings of the Latin mass text, the Magnificat, Latin motets and German sacred songs. The central theme is Christmas, from Mary’s Annunciation and Hymn of Praise via many four-part Latin motets (e.g. the Annunciation to the shepherds), chorales and song settings of Christmas texts right up to the New Year hymn Helft mir Gottes Güte preisen (Help me to praise God’s goodness).
